Make New Friends, But Keep the Old...

Yesterday my great friend Nicole came over to visit us at home. We met in college, our first year- 1998, over 10 years now for those of you who don't feel like getting your calculators out.
I remember the scene, I had seen her around, but not really talked to her. She lived across the street, not in the main dorms, and her crowd was not really mine. I had not come out of my shell yet, I was extremely homesick and in retrospect, pretty depressed. Anyway, I got to talking with her in the dining hall about this concert I had gone to at home over the weekend. She got really excited about it, and we found we had some common ground. Then, we started to hang out a little, and a little led to a lot, and then before you know it, a new friend is an old friend. Memories created. Joys shared. We were neighbors our sophomore and junior year, and roommates our senior year. We graduated the same day. Stood up in each other's weddings. Have lent a listening ear in times of need. And, we have had some serious, almost pee your pants laughs.

Now, to add more richness to our friendship, Nicole became a mother to Raia this past May. We were pregnant together for most of her first and my second pregnancies, so that was a fun time. I remember driving and talking to Nicole about this one specific thing. I had just given birth to Zachary, and she was about due. I was trying to explain to her the look on a newborns face after they nurse to sleep. I was trying to share the contentment and preciousness that that look holds. Once Raia came, I remember us talking about that conversation, and of course, her totally knowing what I was talking about. Now, we have those times a lot. There so many things are similar in the life of 2 moms with little ones. It's great!

So, here's to friends that you realize, are now, your old friends....
